A total of 9 threat abatement strategies have been identified to help tackle this key threatening process. Each of these strategies has a number of priority actions within it. The table below shows these strategies and priority actions. You can also see details of the broad geographic regions each priority action applies to in New South Wales.
| Description of priority action | Priority |
|---|
| Threat abatement strategy: Community and land-holder liaison/ awareness and/or education |
| Prepare awareness and education raising materials that aim to prevent human dispersal of Gambusia. | Medium |
| Threat abatement strategy: Coordinate the recovery and/or threat abatement program |
| Coordinate implementation of PAS actions for this KTP based on the approved Threat Abatement Plan. | Medium |
| Threat abatement strategy: Establish management agreements with public authorities CMAs and land managers/owners |
| Prepare environment assessment advice for Local Government regarding activities that may result in human induced dispersal of Gambusia. | Medium |
| Threat abatement strategy: Measure response to control |
| Monitor response of frogs to removal of Gambusia at high priority sites (where control of Gambusia has been implemented). | Medium |
| Threat abatement strategy: Prepare Statement of Intent |
| Prepare a statement of intent by 2007. | Medium |
| Threat abatement strategy: Research |
| Investigate factors limiting dispersal of gambusia which will assist our understanding of which habitats are /maybe at risk from occupation by Gambusia. | Medium |
| Investigate impacts of gambusia on frogs, particularly those identified in the threat abatement plan as at risk from population level impacts from Gambusia predation / competition. | Medium |
| Undertake control trials for chemicals that may work to reduce or remove Gambusia from waterbodies. | Medium |
| Assess opportunities for the creation of supplementary habitat for high priority frogs such as Green and Golden Bell frog and Wallum froglet at key sites. | Low |
| Threat abatement strategy: Review and amend or adopt existing legislation and policies |
| Declare Gambusia noxious in NSW Fisheries Management Act. | High |
| Participate in broad scale river health programs which will benefit the management of Gambusia from a whole of ecosystem perspective i.e. manage those aspects of river health that reduce habitat preferences of native frog species. | Medium |
| Threat abatement strategy: Survey/Mapping and Habitat assessment |
| Survey sites of frog species that are at high risk of population level impacts from Gambusia predation e.g. Green and Golden Bell frog and Wallum froglet to assess efficacy for control. | Medium |
| Threat abatement strategy: Undertake control actions |
| Undertake targeted control of Gambusia at key sites where control is assessed to be feasible. | Medium |
