Infection of native plants by Phytophthora cinnamomi - Priority actions

A total of 11 threat abatement strategies have been identified to help tackle this key threatening process. Each of these strategies has a number of priority actions within it. The table below shows these strategies and priority actions. You can also see details of the broad geographic regions each priority action applies to in New South Wales.

For more general information about this key threatening process, see a detailed threat profile.

Description of priority actionPriority
Threat abatement strategy: Community and land-holder liaison/ awareness and/or education
Prepare and implement a communication strategy that effectively delivers key messages regarding the pathogen through a range of media, and encourages the adoption of phytosanitary protocols at vulnerable sites across all tenures. High
Conduct training for land managers and field staff in relation to the identification of disease symptoms and the implementation of phytosanitary protocols. Medium
Establish and/or maintain networks with the Australian Government, other State agencies, Catchment Management Authorities, local government and research organisations in relation to the management of the pathogen. Medium
Establish demonstration sites to promote the adoption and effective implementation of the phytosanitary protocols. Medium
Threat abatement strategy: Coordinate the recovery and/or threat abatement program
Support the Phytophthora cinnamomi Threat Abatement Working Group in its role in coordinating the threat abatement program for the pathogen, and seeking funding for its implementation. High
Threat abatement strategy: Develop and implement protocols and guidelines
With reference to the National Best Practice Guidelines, prepare phytosanitary protocols which document the practices and strategies that can be applied in NSW to reduce the risk of the pathogen being inadvertently spread. High
Threat abatement strategy: Monitoring
Undertake monitoring of key sites to determine the effectiveness of measures to prevent the spread of the pathogen and to suppress its activity in infested areas, and to determine the long term impact of the pathogen on biodiversity. Medium
Threat abatement strategy: Prepare Statement of Intent
Prepare a Statement of Intent by 2007. . High
Threat abatement strategy: Prepare TAP
Prepare a NSW TAP by 2009. . Medium
Threat abatement strategy: Prioritise control actions
Develop and apply criteria for prioritising sites for active management. High
Threat abatement strategy: Research
Investigate the limitations and optimal methods for the control and eradication of the pathogen (including consideration of off-target impacts). High
Test the susceptibility of species, populations and ecological communities (including key habitat for threatened fauna) that are at risk. High
Develop landscape models that will predict spatial and temporal changes in pathogen distribution and/or disease expression under different development scenarios. Medium
Identify reliable diagnostic species that will assist with the identification of areas where the pathogen is active. Medium
Investigate the potential impact that climate change is likely to have on the distribution and virulence of the pathogen, and incorporate these into the risk assessment model where possible. Medium
Threat abatement strategy: Review evidence of impacts
Adapt and apply the National Risk Assessment Model to assess the level of risk that the disease poses to species, populations and ecological communities in NSW. High
Threat abatement strategy: Survey/Mapping and Habitat assessment
Conduct systematic and targeted surveys and soil sampling to determine which areas containing at risk species, populations and ecological communities are currently infested by the pathogen. High
Maintain a database of sites where the pathogen has been identified, or is suspected of being present. Medium
Threat abatement strategy: Undertake control actions
Encourage land managers to undertake on-ground management at priority sites outside the NPWS estate. High
Undertake on-ground management at priority sites on the NPWS estate. High
